Broome County Executive and Director of Employment and Training Announcing Funding for ELITE Youth Employment Program

BINGHAMTON, NYBroome County Executive Jason Garnar and Director of Employment and Training Sara Liu announced available funding for the ELITE (Empowering Leaders Into Tomorrow’s Employment) Youth Program.

The ELITE Youth Program is an education program providing jobs readiness training and paid employment opportunities to 75 eligible disadvantaged youth in Broome County. To be eligible, participants must be 16 to 24 years old and out of school They must also have one of the following barriers to employment:

-Students who were unable to complete high school/dropouts

-Homeless

-Are parents or are pregnant

-Part of the foster care system

-An Individual who has had experience with the criminal justice system

-Individual who identifies as having a disability

-Low-income AND is English or math skills deficient

 “This is money that we’ve had to spend from New York State,” Said Garnar. “It had just been sitting there and we almost lost it. But our new Director of Employment and Training, Sara Liu, found it and really got this program back on its feet.”

 The total allocation to fund youth employment is $121, 027.50. To date Broome County has only spent $3,801.17 leaving $117,226.33 or 96.86% of the total to be spent before the end of June, 2017.
