Broome County Executive and District Attorney Hold Joint Press Conference on Welfare Fraud
Binghamton, NY (February 1st, 2017) –Today Broome County Executive Jason Garnar and District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced a plan to fight welfare fraud in Broome County.
“Programs like welfare are designed to help people through tough times,” said Garnar. “Only those who need these services should be receiving them. It’s our duty to prevent, prosecute and bring to justice those who abuse the system.”
District Attorney Cornwell added, “Welfare fraud and drug use in Broome County have skyrocketed over the last decade. Not only are we launching the most aggressive welfare fraud prosecution the county has ever seen; we will expand our fight to ensure drug dealers aren’t directly or indirectly receiving benefits. There is an entire fraud industry, beyond what the county has ever seen, we will put to an end.”
