The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) is pleased to announce the return of the Environmental Photography Competition. The 2017 event marks the return of the popular program last held in 2012. Held in memory of Joyce K. L. Smith, a local leader and community activist for the environment, the intent of the show is to highlight the beauty of Broome County’s environment. Winning photos will be displayed at the Broome County Arts Council Gallery for the month of July.
Entrants may submit up to three (3) photographs for consideration in three (3) categories: wildlife, plant life, and natural landscape. This year there will also be a prize for one photo from all entries that best fits this year's theme, "Our Forested Lands". A panel of professionals will select winning photographs as follows:
Winners and those receiving honorable mention will be exhibited at the Broome County Arts Council Gallery from July 7th through July 28th. An opening reception and awards ceremony, open to the public, will be held during First Friday on July 7th from 6-9pm.

Memorial Fund Donations
The event is held in honor of Joyce K.L. Smith, a longtime EMC member and local leader for the environment. Contributions to the Joyce Smith Memorial Fund, which is dedicated to furthering environmental education and enhancing environmental quality, are welcome and appreciated. The EMC is Broome County government's citizens’ advisory board on local environment matters. Joyce Smith and her husband, Paul, played key roles in establishing and maintaining the work of the EMC and made many significant contributions to the organization over the years. Joyce helped to establish and plan the EMC’s first Photo Show. The Show was renamed in her honor and a memorial fund was established in her name commemorating her dedication to the EMC and her appreciation for Broome County's environment.
